Hodges with J and Mark–trying out the new camera

I’ve been living up to my promise this go ’round and actually taking the camera with me on every ride. I got a Pelican case for it so it’s easily accessible yet still tucked away in a nice water and crush proof container. Convenient!

Yesterday I got in a nice long ride in with J and Mark. I did a good loop of North Hodges with J, including the lesser known stuff we’ve been working in. J and I were able to take some pics. Nothing to interesting, mainly just trying out the new camera. It has a feature called “Smart Capture” where it chooses the setting it thinks is best for the conditions. Sometimes the pictures turn out a little off. I don’t know. Maybe it’s just me. I’m still making friends with it., of course we had to get pics of my favorite rock roll:

J and I then hooked up with Mark and hit up the South side:

After we finished off the South side, J had to split. Mark wasn’t quite done, so I went with him on another lap of the North side. By the end of the ride, we were pushing dark pretty good and I was whipped. The Spot was a wee-bit thrashed as well. A great way to spend and afternoon though!! If only they could all be that way.

Until next time, seek your bliss.

Father’s Day ride with dad and J

First off, let me say Happy Father’s Day to all the dads put there!! I scored a pretty sweet present today: A new Kodak M380 10.2 mp camera!!

It’s really nice and a sweet upgrade over the 6.1 mp Kodak I had. How big of a difference could 4 megapixels make you may ask? I did a quick little photo comparison in the yard a bit ago. I can definitely tell a difference!!You be the judge:

I got in an early Father’s Day ride with dad and Jeremy yesterday here in Fallbrook. Dad and I have been talking about riding up to the cell towers on Red Mountain again. I figured we might as well take advantage of this unseasonably cool weather and do it now. So the three of us set out yesterday afternoon. Jeremy came up with April and the kids and they stayed at the house and we were planning a BBQ after the ride, so we were under a bit of a time crunch. Nothing like having a massive climb ahead of you with the theme of the ride being “Hurry”.

Needless to say, I didn’t stop to take a bunch of pics, but I did get a few (all taken with my old camera by the way):

It was a great ride and we actually knocked it out pretty fast. I didn’t bring the GPS, but I know it’s something like a 2,000′ gain in about 3 miles. The good news is, it’s about a 2,000′ descent in about 3 miles on the way back!! My original plan was to add in the regular Fallbrook/SMaRT loop into the ride and start in the morning–making the entire ride 15 miles and closer to 3,000′ of climbing, but some things came up and we had to re-schedule the ride to the afternoon and shorten it a little.

Earlier in the week, dad and I were riding the regular loop and decided to do a bit of exploring when we ran across someone’s “secret sauce” hand made trail. It wasn’t very long but was well hidden. It was pretty fun while it lasted. Although, there were two Poison Oak bushes growing over a section of it which halted us in our tracks, so we didn’t get to explore all of it:

That’s all for now. Until next time, seek your bliss and plant new seeds.

It’s all fun and games until someone loses an eye!!

So I was at Taekwondo working weapons Wednesday night. Lately I’ve been working with the Ssahng Jeol Bong, more commonly known as the Nunchuku–and I just lost control of it. I hit myself in the right eye with the end of it. It happened so fast I didn’t even have time to blink, so it caught my eyeball dead on.

It stung real bad right away and I saw streaking white light–like when they make the jump to light speed in Star Wars:

It’s like Han and Chewie had a front row seat in my eye!!

When that went away and I opened my eye, my vision was real blurry. That wouldn’t go away. Mrs. Neal came right over and asked me what happened. I told her and she helped me over to the benches so I could sit down. She gave me some Renuz eye drops to put in my eye to try to make it feel better. When those burned like fire instead of helping, I knew I needed to go to the E.R. I couldn’t see out of that eye one bit, so Mrs. Neal was kind enough to drive me home. We got someone to come over and watch the kids and Tonya took me to the E.R. Fortunately, it was a ghost town when we got there and they took me right back.

The doctor came in right away and squirted a local anesthetic drop in the eye, then some dye so he could look at it under a fluorescent light. He saw that I had abrasions on the Cornea. So, he applied some anti-biotic cream DIRECTLY ONTO MY FRIGGING EYEBALL and then put a patch over it. He told me I would need to follow up with my family doctor the next day.

Here’s what I looked like when I got home:

So first thing Thursday morning I called my doctor and his nurse said to just come in right away and they would work me in. Tonya took off work, swung by the house and picked me up and off we were to our second doctor’s visit in 12 hours. When we got there, they took me right into an exam room and my doc–who is AWESOME by the way—came right in. He examined my eye and agreed I had a Corneal Abrasion, but wanted me to be seen by an Ophthalmologist to be sure that I didn’t have any Retinal damage. He sent an emergency referral to an Ophthalmologist right across the street from his office–convenient!!

Tonya and I went and had lunch while we waited for the referral to go through. We went to a Shakey’s Pizza in the area for their lunch buffet. I wanted to leave almost as soon as we got there though. I’ve been there many times before and they are usually busy–this day was no different. However, whatever happened to being polite and not staring?? I felt like the frigging Elephant Man!! It was ridiculous. I mean, it’s only an eye patch people!! Seriously!! I don’t know why people don’t raise their children to be polite and not stare, but I know my kids wouldn’t have!! And this isn’t a new problem, since the people who were gawking at me like I had 2 heads were all adults. OY!!

So the referral went through and we were off to the Ophthalmologist–for our third doctor’s office visit in just over 12 hours.. Once we got in, it took awhile for the paper work to get processed. I then had a routine eye exam on the injured eye, followed by more waiting. It was pretty unpleasant. I was in pain and waiting in a bright waiting room wasn’t the best, but I wasn’t upset. They were working me into their already full calendar on an emergency referral after all.

The doctor finally came out and called me back. She was really nice and even though they were working me in and the waiting room was packed, I never felt like she was trying to rush me through. She did a pretty thorough exam with the Eye Scope thingy–from what I could tell anyway–and took time to explain what she was looking for, what she was doing and what to expect. At one point during the exam, she told me that she was going to have to use a pretty intense light and that it would likely cause pain in my eye. She apologized a lot but said it was necessary. She told me to feel free to pull away if I felt I needed to, to blink or look away as much as I felt I needed to but that we’d have to get through it.

When she said “Intense light that would likely cause pain in my eye”, she wasn’t lying one bit. WOW!! It took a little bit to get through that one. She said that that with the thousands of nerve endings in the eye–all of which were on high alert in my eye–it wouldn’t be a pleasant experience at all. She wasn’t kidding. It actually made me nauseous and dizzy. She said my Retina was intact–always a good thing to hear!! However I did have a condition called “Iritis”, which is basically a bruising and swelling of the inside of the eye. It causes severe pain, since the swelling is on the inside of the eye, it has nowhere to go.

After that, she put dye in my eye and switched the Eye Scope to the blue fluorescent light and confirmed I had a large abrasion/scratch/chasm/laceration/a-river-runs-through-it going down my Cornea. Her exact words were “A rather large Corneal abrasion.” She said the good news was that the antibiotic ointment and the patch did their job–keeping the eye closed and medicated meant that the abrasion was already starting to gloss over and heal!! She told me I didn’t need to wear the patch anymore — which was just fine by me. I was already getting really tired of that thing. Plus, Tonya was getting tired of hearing me say things like “Shiver me timbers” and “There must be an ‘X’ on your pants cuz I’m diggin’ yer booty”. You can see where that could get annoying after awhile.

She prescribed some steroid eye drops to take every 3-4 hours for the Iritis. I have to go back next week to make sure the Corneal Abrasion is healed up and to check and see how the Iritis is coming along.

All in all Tonya and I spent a good 8 of the last 20 hours inside a doctor’s office of one kind or another. And for more info, here’s the Wikipedia link for Iritis: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iritis

I went back to work today and felt like it would never end!! Wow it was bright out there!! My pupil was dilated all day long and the light was killing me. I have never had a pupil dilated before and frankly don’t care to ever have it done again. BRIGHT LIGHT IN MY EYES GO AWAY PLEASE!!!!!! My eye was twitching and freaking out all day long. At one point it actually said to me, “Remember that patch thing you had on me? Ya, that was nice and dark. You should put that back on. Don’t get me wrong, the sunglasses are a nice touch and I appreciate the effort but they aren’t exactly cutting it. Do you have anything in a welder’s mask?”

On a positive note, my pupil is finally getting back to normal size now. Yes, it’s been an interesting couple of days. Until next time, seek your bliss and plant new seeds.

Today’s ride

OK. I know I may sound like a broken record here. But I’m making yet another resolution to take my camera with me on rides. I’m getting pretty sick of not having any bike content on this here Blog that’s supposed to be primarily about bikes. I never really liked carrying it on the chest strap on my CamelBak, so I’m going to carry it in one of the outer pockets where it’s still pretty accessible. I figure I’ll get a Pelican case or something similar to carry it in. Something that’s waterproof and crash proof just to be on the safe side.

So J and I went on a local ride today and I brought the camera. We took some vids, nothing special, but it was fun to play around and at least now I have some bike related content for once.

First off is three different angles of an alternate line I started taking on a short downhill chute to a creek crossing. Pretty much everyone takes the obvious line to the left. It’s pretty much a straight shot down. I picked out a slightly more technical line on the right hand side. It causes you to come in, make a sharp right, roll through a sharp ravine, make a sharp left and ride down to the creek and make a sweeping right to go through the creek. Nothing to crazy by any stretch, but it is more technical than the more traveled route and it seems more steep this way.

Like I said, I rolled it three times and J shot video at high, middle and low angles:

High:

Middle:

Low:

J also snapped a pic of me hitting a straight down, rutted out line. It’s pretty choppy and soft. I don’t know why anyone would take that line, but there’s tire tracks there so I thought I’d giver it a go:

Coming across the creek for the final time after that final shot. With the 3 vids and the one pic, that was 4 times down that hill, LOL:

I also got a couple shots of the Spot at the bottom of the creek:

We continued on and I finally got video of one of my favorite rock rollers. It’s actually rather easy, it just looks like a total mind screw from the top:

J couldn’t get up the nerve to roll it, but he did work up the nerve to “huck” it if you can believe that!!

On our way back, we shot a couple vids of us doing a little jumping off the marina road. It’s actually a pretty fun speed section. You don’t get a ton of air by any stretch, but you fly in pretty fast and it’s really fun. We aren’t trying to act like we’re hardcore–we aren’t. We’re just a couple guys who had a fun ride and that’s what it’s all about!!

J goes first:

Then me:

I’m going to try to get in a local ride with dad and Dylan tomorrow after work. We shall see. Thanks for coming along on my ride today. Until next time, seek your bliss and plant new seeds.

A little update

I have never talked about it here…heck, I’ve never talked about it to most people I know. The only people that know are members of my family. I’ve suffered from migraine headaches for most of my life. They run in my family. I used to take medication called Imitrex when I got really bad ones, but I didn’t like it. It worked, but I just ended up sleeping all the time. My doctor at the time didn’t really understand headaches or migraines and didn’t seem to care a whole lot.

My mom and my sister have suffered from migraines for most of their lives too. I believe they suffer from the severe “oh my gosh I have an ice pick stuck in my head”, out of nowhere, sharp pain type flare-ups. I on the other hand, suffer from the more moderate, dull headaches that camp out behind my eyes. They don’t hurt as bad, which is good. But try having a headache for days on end. And when I say days, I mean weeks. And when I say weeks, I mean months. I would get constant headaches that would last for months. All day, every day. Ibuprofen couldn’t dent it. It laughed at Tylenol. Taking Aleve and Excedrin Migraine were like throwing pebbles at a tank. Nothing helped. It didn’t matter what foods I ate. It didn’t matter if I got a lot of sleep or a little. It didn’t matter if I was over-weight or healthy. I tried and tried to isolate a trigger and could never find one. So, I just learned to live with them.

Then they went away for a few years and I was hoping they’d never return. In the mean time, my mom started going to a different doctor. He understood headaches and migraines better and had compassion for people suffering from them. He started working with my mom to figure out what maintenance medications would work for her to stop them. After trying many different kinds, she found one about a year and a half ago that worked–and worked well!! My sister got on the same medication and it worked for her too. I started going to the same family doc as my mom a couple years ago myself, but my headaches were gone, so we never talked about it.

About a year or so ago, my own headaches came back. They weren’t too bad at first, so I ignored them. They got progressively worse though, so last week I decided to go to my doc and do something about it. I mean, I’ve had a pretty severe headache all day, every day since about the middle of February. I’ve talked to a couple people about this and they said they couldn’t believe it, that they couldn’t tell. I guess I had just learned to live with it and function that way. Well, I guess I finally just got fed up and decided to do something about it.

So I started taking the same medication that my mom and sis are on about a week ago. It’s the first time in my life I’ve been on any sort of long term medication. As with any long term medication, it has both positive and negative side effects. I’m seeing a few of the negative side effects already. Hopefully they will go away soon. A couple of those negative side effects are fatigue and joint and muscle pain–which I’m dealing with right now pretty bad. So if I don’t seem to be myself lately or in the near future, please bear with me. Hopefully these will go away soon and I will be on the road to leading a headache free life soon. I’ll update as it progresses.

Wish me luck :-)

As always, seek your bliss and plant new seeds.

New house, no rides

As I mentioned before, we decided to finally make the move back up to Fallbrook. Tonya works here. We go to church here. Taekwondo is here. It just makes sense. So last weekend was the big move. I took off work Friday and moved some of the more fragile electronics. Then dad helped me go get a refrigerator.

Saturday, we brought in a 26′ U-Haul. Jeremy, Mike and April, dad and Sean, Dylan, Tonya and me all set to work. It went pretty smooth and we were loaded, transported, unloaded and had the U-Haul returned all by 4pm!! Thanks to the Lystra and Morris clan for coming over to help us unload!!

It’s so awesome to be back in Fallbrook. Ramona was OK, but Fallbrook just seems more like home. No more long commutes–for work, from 45 minutes down to 22 minutes. Plus no more hour drive home after Taekwondo. I get to sleep in a little bit more–from getting up at 4:45am to getting up at 5am and eating breakfast at home before I head out. Plus, the money savings is quite significant. I only used 1/4 a tank of gas to and from work all week–instead of having to fill up twice. Living closer to work allows me to eat all meals at home instead of constantly having to eat out. I used to spend $60-$75 a week in food. This week I spent $4.

I took a few pics of the new digs:

View from the street:

Down at the edge of the front yard looking at front of house. The yard is huge!! Horseshoe pit and all:

Back Yard:

Back of house:

Standing in back yard, looking across driveway into front yard

The view from our front deck/porch. This pic does it no justice:

We still have a lot of unpacking to do. I also came down with this weird summer cold that’s been going around. All that means I haven’t got a ride in in almost 2 weeks. UGH!!! Hopefully I can remedy that soon!! Until next time, seek your bliss.
