Ramona Local Ride

This isn’t really a Ride Report, so I didn’t prefix as such. This is more like a friendly bit of advice: If there’s a trail you’ve put off exploring, don’t put it off any longer.

We’ve lived out in Ramona’s Country Estates since just before Christmas. I’ve barely explored the endless trail system in the hills surrounding my neighborhood. I’ve just recently started piecing together some good loops of varying length.

Earlier in the week, I scoped out another trailhead. Today, I talked Sean into exploring with me since he recently moved into the area as well. It was crazy hot again today, so we waited until almost 7PM to beat the heat.

It started off with a few hundred yards of paved climbing. Some of the locals have painted it so it looks like a Tour de France mountain stage. The names ARMSTRONG and LEMOND are painted in huge letters, along with various other symbols.

This little rattler did not want to move, so we ended up going around him, off trail:

Awesome scenery (Light was fading fast so I only got a couple pics):

High Meadow:

Cuyamaca Peak in the distance:

Day turned to night and we broke out the lights (yes, we came prepared). We climbed up some switchbacks to the top of a hill and came out on a very well maintained and used dirt road. We saw cars on a highway in the distance and figured it was Hwy 78 going out to Julian. We decided to turn back and just retrace our route instead of taking any chances and I’m REALLY glad we did—

Our turn-around point is at the northeastern-most point. About 2 miles from Witch Creek, which isn’t far from Santa Isabel. That would have been a sucky ride back home. What started as a little exploration ride turned into a 2.5 hour, 14+ mile, 1,800′ of elevation gain ride. Pretty fun for a Sunday evening.

The final wildlife tally:

Day:
1 Rattlesnake
5 Horned Toads

Night:
10 frogs
1 Skunk
5,000 Field Mice (give or take 1 or 2

Again, if there’s a trail you’ve been meaning to explore and you keep putting it off–stop procrastinating and Git ‘er done!! You never know what you may find!!

I’m planning on beating the heat yet again and heading out for an early morning ride at Hodges before work tomorrow on the rigid SS. I’m not sure what the rest of the week will hold, but with good stuff right out my front door, I’m sure something will turn up ;-)

Until next time, seek your bliss.

Ride lots…

Inaugural Bacon Bowl Ride

WARNING: This report contains R-rated graphic images that may block your arteries from just looking at the attached pictures!!! Vegetarians, health food consumers, and non-swine eaters are highly advised not to continue reading! A non-current EMT (me) was standing by, but in fine Reno911 form, we had no defibrillators if one (or several) of the participants had congestive heart failure. I know at least two of the 7 participants are alive, while the fates of others may be either be at an Emergency Room or have succumbed to the fine cuisine.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Ben has been talking of doing a ride from his new digs in San Eljio ever since the Moab trip at the end of April. His backyard just happens to be La Costa. So Saturday was the decided day of pain. Admittance to this ride was a requisite Bacon Bowl. If you don’t know what one is, go Google it. Or just think of it as a crispy tortilla bowl…that just happens to be made from 16 oz of bacon.

Done with the weaving, ready for the oven:

But more on the Bacon Bowls later.

Seven brave souls showed for this ride, with 6 of us not having ridden all together since the Moab trip. The ride from Ben’s place is a short urban descent through San Eljio MILF park, that has around 4 flights of concrete stair steps, progressively getting longer. I guess our Moab skills quickly eroded, as Mark/Offroadie was the first casualty of the day by going over the bars at the bottom of the 2 dozen + stairs at the corner of San Eljio Rd and Elfin Forest Rd.

I think his excuse was that he hadn’t ridden his hardtail since Moab, but I pointed out that he wasn’t on the Superlight that Sean let him borrow for Porcupine Rim, so it was actually since Grand Junction. Ben further rubbed salt-in-the-wound by mentioning that he doesn’t even do those stairs on his single speed. What a guy, too bad he didn’t mention that earlier!

About the time we finished straightening the bike, the pain receptors subsided to the point where Mark/Offroadie could move and get on with the ride. Once we finished terrorizing the neighborhood by riding around the town center’s fountain and the new trail behind the newly constructed Albertson’s, it was time for the climb up to La Costa. As with most climbs, everyone agreed this one sucks. It’s long and steep, similar to getting up to Elfin Forest sans switchbacks and technical features to take your mind off the climb in front of you.

Once at the top, it was time to descend Vista Del Mar. This one is almost as fun as NASCAR. It’s got some pretty steep switchbacks. What’s really cool, is that the trail builders lined them with chicken wire so that your tires get constant traction and you don’t skid–which would erode the trail away.

On the way down, we stopped to play on one set of features. But it wasn’t cooperating…or us with it. Ben tried the rock feature below and got a nice face plant off trail for his troubles.

Here, Mark SLadnas attempts it. I think these pics were from attempt #3. You see my arms off to the side. I was spotting him and he needed it on that one.

Reaching the bottom it was back up Switchbacks. Next was fun on NASCAR. No one attempted the drop on the first attempt, but Ben would show how it’s done, followed by Evan.

Always wanting to be the center of attention, Mark/Sladnas got the most air but forgot about the consequences of landing at high speed. We didn’t get pics of the carnage, but let’s just say he did some serious off-trail exploring!!

Had it been anyone else, they would have had to be airlifted out on a MediVac. But Mark, aka Gumby, always seems to come out with just a few flesh wounds.

Vista Del Mar was the climb back to the top followed by the brake burner of a descent off the north side we first climbed. Ben managed to link some other MILF trails around San Eljio, some that go right by some wooded areas. Be careful though, the woods aren’t un-inhabited:

Those intersting faces are on several of the trees nearest to the trail. Pretty cool.

From there, we rode through a section of a residential area that led back into the hills on the north side of San Elifo. This trail required yet more climbing and ended with a singletrack trail above the homes with a super tight switchbacks requiring several dismounts. In all it was a decent 13 mile leg burning and back breaking ride.

Once back at Ben’s pad it was time for brews and to partake in someone’s warped idea of a culinary experience. Ben’s mom happened to be in town and as any fine chef would do, asked if she should make soufflé. But being a group of mountain bikers, I guess that was too rich for our tastes. So she whipped up some eggs, hashbrowns, sausage and breakfast potatoes to fill our bacon bowls. The results were these gut busting, artery clogging creations:

I can’t say how everyone faired, but at 630 pm yesterday I was still burping bacon. Needless to say, we all agreed we won’t be trying this again…ever! Well, not until next year anyway.

That night, we went to a Lake Elsinore Storm Minor League Baseball game. Our Taekwondo school has an outing there every year. Last year was super fun, so we knew this year’s would be good too. What was even more cool–was that Dylan got to throw out the first pitch!! We didn’t tell him until it was time to report at the announcer’s booth.

I missed getting a photo of him pitching it because of where they had me stand, so I got a pic of the player catching it instead. Oh well. I’m a little mad at myself that I couldn’t get the shot, but what are you gonna do?? The pink jersey the player is wearing is because it was Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Awareness Night/Fundraiser.

On the field, waiting for the big moment (a little nervous–wouldn’t you be!!??):

The catch:

Checking out the players’ signature on the ball:

I’m going to try to get in a ride tomorrow morning at Hodges. I am also giving a small Tour de Fallbrook for a few peeps from STR on Wednesday. A few of them I’ve never met or ridden with before, so I’m looking forward to it a lot.

Thursday is belt testing at Taekwondo WHOOT WHOOT!!!!! Red belt here we come. I’m hoping for a full weekend of riding too, so we’ll see. Until then, seek your bliss.

Mid-week Musings

I didn’t get to go on my usual Wednesday ride today. J was busy, I was extremely tired and just didn’t have it in me to bust out a solo. I came home and took a nap which was AWESOME!! But, I am really itching for a ride. I won’t be on the bike again until Friday and the thought of that is killing me. I know it’s only 2 days, but it feels like an eternity. Oh well.

I’m still waiting on my new 29er wheels and haven’t really done anything to the new frame except for installing the cranks. I also need a new seatpost, seatpost clamp and headset because those same items from my old frame are a different size and won’t transfer over. Well, the headset is the same size, but I had a cheap one on the Zion frame and I want to put a Chris King on the new Niner frame, so there’s that.

Money is a bit tight right now and if you are reading this, you probably know me well enough to know I don’t settle for the cheap stuff. That’s a little mis-leading I suppose. Since I’m able to get the shop discount, the difference between the cheap stuff and the better stuff really isn’t that significant. I could have it all for around $100. Still, a hundred bucks is a hundred bucks. I’ll likely sell a few more extra parts to cover the cost. Thank goodness for Ebay!! I can’t wait until it’s finished though. It is going to be SO saweet!! I can smell it from here…

The initial results form the SS “69er” conversion are 100% positive!! I have several rides on it now and it get’s 2 thumbs up for sure. I am really liking the way it rides now. Climbing is so much nicer with the rigis fork and slightly reduced weight. And, the 29er wheel up front takes the edge off the rough stuf enough so that the bike rides very well. I am definitely going to stick with this set-up for awhile.

Until next time, seek your bliss.

The SS Goes “69er” and 29er Upgrades

Once again, some unused parts have gone on the auction block and I am proud to announce a new addition to the ol’ stable:

It is a Niner Cycles EMD9. The “EMD” stands for “Eat My Dust”. I was able to direct purchase it from Niner since work is a Niner dealer. It should arrive any day now!! I am also dumping the old, heavy wheelset for something lighter and sexier–No-Tubes ZTR Flows on Silver Chris King hubs!!! I can’t wait to get all the parts swapped over from the current Zion 29er frame.

Since I’m having a new 29er wheelset built. I decided to put the carbon rigid fork I once tried on my SS back on and take the front wheel from my old 29er wheelset and put it on my SS, to try running it as a 69er–26” rear wheel and 29” front wheel. Get it?? Some may ask “why?” I say “why not”. If I don’t like it, I’ll take it off and go back to the 26er.

I have ridden it at Hodges and LPQ and so far so good. First impressions: WAY better than rolling it rigid 26er (duh)!! Not as plush as a 26er with 4″ travel Reba (double duh). But it is surprisingly smooth. I actually wasn’t expecting it to make that much of a difference, but so far it is. I didn’t have any issues over the rocky stuff and the rollers and steeps were pretty smooth too.

I positively hated the rigid 26er experience, but I can really see myself getting into this 69er thing. It’s impossible to form a definite opinion after just one ride (or even 2 or 3), so I’ll post another report when I have more rides on it. So far though, I’m really thinking it’ll stay this way.

Here’s a couple pics:

Additionally, I don’t know if Blog.com did something to their software or what, but all my pictures are getting chopped at the text border. It was really frustrating, so I had to change templates. I’m not to fond of the brown, but it let me do a little bit more with the header image too, so I’ll get used to it.

I have several rides planned over the next few days. I will probably take the 69er out on all of them to continue to ride test it. Until then, seek your bliss.
